Greetings Bill, I'm not exactly sure, but I think that you are asking for control over the "excerpts" that ht://Dig displays. You can set the number of such snippets of context using max_excerpts, and the amount of each document which is available for use as context is controlled by max_head_length. To ensure that the amount of context is fairly small, you can set excerpt_length.
Also, ensure that excerpt_show_top is false, because it will disable the display of excerpts. I hope this helps. People on htdig-general may have better suggestions on how to set up ht://Dig to your liking.
