Sounds like a libtool mess-up to me.

FYI:  In 32bit Intel Linux the -fPIC -DPIC flags seem to be redundant (ie 
not enforced at link time).  This is definetely NOT the case on Solaris 
systems.  I'm not suprized that AMD64 needs them.
