Can you read the pdf file with ghostscript? pdf's have several
security options (passwords, text extract, print, etc). If the
Acrobat reader can open the file, but ghostscript barfs with an
error (something about "encrypted file") then it's because of one
or more of those security settings. xpdf may have similar
problems. I suppose you could try the acroread program instead of
xpdf...
