We ran into problems using ht://Dig 3.2.0b3.
Using the new beta 3.2.0b3 for a few days 'in the wild' we soon found out
some searches run away on us :( Every now and then ht://Dig starts chewing
up all memory and all cpu and eventually processes crash when memory runs
out.
It took us some testing and hefty logging to find out a simple search for
'a b' triggers the problem. With this search, very reproducable, within
seconds load average starts to grow from 0.02 on average to 0.7, 1.5, 2.x
and soon going sky-high while grabbing 99.9% CPU and eating swap like a
carnivore.
We use a Debian 'potato' linux system.
We did a pretty standard compile and install as described on
http://htdig.sourceforge.net/install.html
The configure program gave us the "error: either specify a valid zlib
installation with --with-zlib=DIR or disable zlib usage with
--without-zlib" after which this step was repeated with the --without-zlib
option.
After that we compiled and installed htdig without any problems.
The most basic search form that reproduces the problem is:
<form method="get"
action="http://trout.snt.utwente.nl:83/cgi-bin/htdig/htsearch"><input
type="text" size="8" name="words" value=""> <input type="submit"
value="Go"></form>
A simple search for 'a b' or 'a b c' triggers the problem.
I think this is a bug. Can you reproduce it? Can you find and fix it?
Of course I'm available to provide more information...
Tjerk.
