Well, I suspect you probably don't want to allow it to eat up more
memory than you, in fact, have.

This is not particularly a problem with htdig. As the error says, it
cannot connect to the server.
Normally if you're indexing servers that are not yours, you probably
want to set the server_wait_time attribute or make sure that there
are several servers being indexed since htdig will interleave between
them. If you have a relatively fast connection and have not set the
server_wait_time, the indexing will cause a relatively high load on
the other server.
