I just downloaded ht://dig and I am having fun playing with it. I just love how
easy it is to work with this thing!
I like the fact that you can set up templates to customize how the
search engine shows the results. This is great. However ---
What would be really cool is instead of using templates using some kind of
perl script (and hence, any kind of program), with the variables passed in. The
perl script would be executed rather than a template being loaded and
processed. The output of the perl script would be the actual HTML to go into
the page. Kind of like CGI, but for the search engine.
I am semi-new to Linux in general, but this kind of solution would be perfect
for our needs, and may have added unseen benefits to others as well. In fact,
it may be one of those defining moments for the ht://dig project - or am I
suffering from a severe case of hubris? :-)
What we (=SoundDomain.com) want to do is index all of our products. We have a
ton of products, and a lot of descriptions for each of those products, and a
unique picture for each product (as far as they are unique). Of course, we
*don't* want to show the customer just plain text and a link to the product, we
want to show information on the product being referenced. (Brand NEW! on SALE!
and a little pic by the side, and other stuff). If I could get those variables
passed into a script, the script could decide how to show it, and it can go to
the database and get more information (maybe even more appropriate information).
I am very familiar with C/C++ and Perl, and I am wondering if anyone is working
on something similar or related (and if I could get into the action). If not, I
am wondering what would be involved in doing this kind of thing, and if someone
would be willing to mentor me (or tell me why it will never happen).
