Please keep in mind that the collections support is beta and as a feature,
it's not completely implemented and certainly has some bugs. It was
contributed as a patch and was integrated into the 3.2 series. It has not
received active development since the patch, with the exception of some
small bug fixes. Feedback is certainly welcome and will be considered in
the upcoming cleanup of the htsearch code.
The collection_names attribute is used for htsearch output--the
documentation is incorrect in this at the moment. The code will output a
series of COLLECTION_[name] variables for the template, along the same
lines as the method_names attribute.
I would agree that having internal config settings to override search
forms is a necessary feature. At the moment, some CGI fields can be
changed in this fashion and some cannot. Certainly having a
"collections" attribute would be such a candidate.
In short, I'm afraid you can't do what you want at the moment, but we
certainly understand that it's needed.
