hm...
had a similar problem (with my first try with htdig) on solaris..
        --> turned out, that htdig uses /tmp for the tempfiles, which
are
        quite big. And /tmp is in solaris a ram filesystem.
        --> had just to set $TMPDIR to some other directory, and it
worked fine...
