Versions 3.1.x and before don't easily handle anything other than HTTP. At the moment, the 3.2.0 beta series can handle https:// file:// and nntp:// URLs but not FTP. We certainly aim to support FTP indexing in the 3.2 code, but so far no one has stepped forward to do anything about it.
