We are looking into the possibility of replacing our current search capabilities with
a purchased solution.
Before going that route it was thought to compare what other offerings can provide
against what we are getting
already from htdig. A number of solutions are available, each with a slightly
different mix of benefits. The
person leading this research has discovered a company called Autonomy that can provide
- in addition to
boolean/keyword searching - collaborative filtering, social agents, natural language
analysis, and support for
parsing large numbers of file formats I believe there are other companies that market
these capabilities as well.
I honestly don't think I use htdig to its optimum. I think it has a certain number of
capabilities that I am
either not using or unaware of. Up to this point I have been asked to fill a specific
set of needs and htdig has
helped me accomplished that. Any further investigation into htdig's capabilities has
been tempered by my own
personal time constraints so I sometimes wonder if I am taking full advantage of what
it has to offer. That leads
to my question for all of you.
Can htdig provide collaborative filtering, social agents, natural language analysis,
support for parsing a large
number of file formats, the way some of the purchased products claim to? If not, what
would its limitations be
when compared to one of them? Has anyone else done a comparison like this and would
care to share their opinions?
Ultimately it will boil down to the right tool for the right job but I want to make
sure that htdig isn't sold
short by any knowledge gap on my part.
Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.
Tod
