Well, you don't have to create image buttons if you don't want them.
htsearch will automatically create text links to the extra pages by
default.  In fact, if you remove the definitions for next_page_text,
prev_page_text, page_number_text & no_page_number_text from your
configuration file, htsearch will use text links for all pages by default.
If you want separate image buttons for all the numbers, then yes, you'll
need to create the image files.

You don't need to run htdig again after changing this attribute, as it's
only used by htsearch.  The web page http://www.htdig.org/attrs.html
describes all configuration attributes, and lists which programs use
each one.  If htdig and/or htmerge don't use a particular attribute,
then you don't need to rerun them when you change it.
