htdig supports the use of external parsers and external converters, so you
can index just about any file type if you have a filter that converts that
file type to text or HTML. For example, the doc2html.pl external converter
script can be used with pdftotext (part of the xpdf package) to index PDF
files. It can also handle Excel and Powerpoint files, given the right
filters. Its documentation tells you where you can find these filters, and
the program can be easily modified to add new filters as well.
However, indexing is still keyed on URLs, and search results return URLs,
so ultimately, whatever you index needs to be accessible in this way.
htdig is not a general database searching tool. For that, you're often
better off using a CGI front-end that queries the database using SQL
search queries. If you really want to use htdig for this job, you can do
this if you have a CGI front-end to your database that allows you to get
at database records by URL.
