i got it working today. I think this error may have been me rather stupidly
using htsearch.htm rather than search.html. i also recompiled and had a few
errors in my configuration.sorry to waste anyone's time on this one.

Right, but that doesn't answer the question of why it's happening. It's
especially strange because *I* don't have an /etc/htdig and I've never
seen such a message.
Colin, I'm assuming you're using the straight source tar file from
htdig.org or one of the mirrors?
