it's indented for the directory. it can be used in an additional way.
An example/explanation:

So, if you host mulitple sites, and want to keep htdig installed just for
one of the sites, then you can create a directory "search" (as in my
case). Then use this directory for all of the htdig stuff, and enter the
scriptalias and map it to the cgi-bin binary (in this case "htsearch")
and the rest of the contents in /search are not subject for use or viewing
by the public.
