According to Nico De Ranter:

htsearch sets itself to timeout after 5 minutes of operation, using the
alarm() system call. If it's not done by then, the system kills it with
a SIGALRM signal, leading to the error you've noted above. This is done
to keep htsearch from chugging away for far too long and overloading you
web server. The delay is hard-coded.
A faster PC would make a difference, but whether it's enough of a
difference to always avoid a timeout depends on the size of your database
and the frequency of the word you're searching.
