That depends on how your site evolves. If you keep adding to your site,
the database will obviously get bigger. With no updates, it should stay
the same size. With normal updates of documents, the database would
likely get a bit bigger as records are added and deleted. htdig 3.1.5
uses a BTREE structure to the database, so this structure does grow
somewhat as insertions and deletions are done to it.
The issue of alternate work files is a separate one. You can either
update an existing database, or create a new one from scratch, using
alternate work files. To update, of course, you'd need a copy of the
database that uses the alternate name.
