I think the Solaris patch program is buggy when it comes to parsing
unified diffs. The patch itself on ftp.ccsf.org is fine - it doesn't
have mangled tabs or anything like that. It's a simple enough patch
that you can just apply the change by hand quickly, though, so that's
the easy fix.
However, most patches in the archives are unified diffs, so if you want
to get a working patch utility that can handle them all, I suggest you
get and install GNU patch.
