You can't use xpdf as a plug-in replacement for acroread as pdf_parser.
Only acroread will do for this purpose.  There is a version of acroread
for Linux available from Adobe's web site.

However, your best bet is to configure doc2html.pl as an external
converter, to convert PDFs using pdftotext (part of the xpdf package).
