It's not really an autoconf issue. If you need to know the host, there's a
GNU script called config.guess and a companion called config.sub that
establish the cpu-vendor-os triplet. For example, Apache uses their own
configuration script (instead of autoconf), but they use the config.guess
script.
I just updated the config.guess in the htdig-3-1-x branch for the next
release.
