Have you correctly set the external_parsers: attribute in your htdig
configuration file?
You need entries for both application/msexcel and application/vnd.ms-excel
Possibly your server is not associating .xls files with either of those MIME
types.
See how it is configured and change this if necessary.
If it is using a third, reasonable looking MIME type you could add that to
your
external_parsers: attribute instead. (And let us know so that we can be
aware of this MIME type.)
