I'm not sure you're necessarily using the merge feature correctly if
you're running out of memory. How big is your database?
If you do an update dig (i.e. w/o the -i flag), htdig will just run
through and check the modification dates on the files--it will require
*much* less time than an initial indexing run for most people.
Beyond that, you can try the 3.1.6 snapshot, which has a backported
version of the -m <file> flag for htdig--supply a file of URLs and it will
just index those.
