According to Reich, Stefan:

htdig, htsearch et al. allow you to define any arbitrary attribute.
You're not limited to the set of attributes that the programs
use themselves. I think that point needs to be clarified in the
documentation.

If there's no fixed list of values, then no, build_select_lists isn't of
much use to you. I just pointed it out as something than can be used in
conjunction with allow_in_form, in case it might be of use for you.
