This seems to happen to some Cygwin users, but not all. First of all, make sure you're not running out of disk space where you store your databases. If that's not a problem, make sure you follow the instructions in Jim Kerslake's guide: http://www.htdig.org/files/contrib/guides/Installing_on_Win32.html Finally, if the problem persists, try different Cygwin versions.
