I don't think document tree size is the major determining factor for how much VM htdig uses. Actual document sizes may have more of an impact, as does the number of links htdig has to keep in the queue all at once (i.e. the breadth of the tree, rather than overall size). The error message is probably system dependent, but the mailing list archives contain a few mentions of the error virtual memory exceeded in 'new' -- Gilles R.
