autoconf is a GNU package for generating configure scripts. You shouldn't need it just to compile. I think there's a problem with some of the file timestamps in the last 3.1.6 snapshot. (Geoff, can you look into that?) You should be able to just "touch configure" before you "make", and it should be fine. -- Gilles R.
