According to Pietro Palladino:

This problem is fixed in the latest 3.2.0b4 snapshot. See
http://www.htdig.org/files/snapshots/

There can be any of a large number of reasons for this, and it may very
well be that the indexing didn't go OK after all. It's hard to say unless
you use one or more -v options on the htdig command line, because otherwise
it may fail silently. See the FAQ.

However, there are a large number of bugs in 3.2.0b3, so again I'd suggest
you try the latest snapshot, and if you run into problems with it too, try
the troubleshooting section of the FAQ. If that doesn't help, then try
posting again, but including some relevant output from htdig as well as
some info on the suggestions you tried but ruled out from the FAQ.
