Thanks to all who replied to my query. I solved my problem by adding local_urls and local_urls_only to my configuration file.

If you have portions of your site that are SSL-only (i.e. only reachable from https:// URLs) and you intend on indexing these sections, you will want a version of htdig that can handle SSL. You'll obviously also want to do this if your site is ONLY reachable via SSL.
