I'll admit I haven't tried the current snapshots. I've been buried under
running review sessions and grading finals. I'll be trying to push on some
of these issues over the next week before the holidays.

I'd check to make sure you have the latests development tools from
Apple. In particular, the change from 10.0 to 10.1 requires upgrading the
development tools too. Right now there's also a December upgrade of the
OSX Development tools.

Yes, this test in particular runs through a variety of possibilities--some
will work and some will fail. As Gilles mentioned, try running:

./configure >configure.log

or if the problem is when running "make," then:

make >make.log 2>&1
