You may want to do your config file edits in an editor that doesn't do
on-screen word-wrapping.  You've got multiple attribute definitions
running into each other on a single line...

> search_results_footer:  /web/u289/www43508/htdig/common/footer.html 
>nothing_found_file: /web/u289/www43508/htdig/common/nomatch.html syntax_error_file: 
>/web/u289/www43508/htdig/common/syntax.html

You can't do that.  They all become part of the search_results_footer
definition.  Put a newline character between each definition and you
should be fine.
