This was an old question, which I don't know if it's still relevant or not.
The ht://Dig package comes with the htnotify program, which I believe you're
now aware of from other e-mails.  In terms of determining whether something
"major" happens, I'm not quite sure what you mean by that.  htdig is meant
to run silently by default, so you don't usually get much output even if it
fails, but you can add as many -v options as you want in the script that
runs htdig if you need to trace through its runs later on.
