I believe this request from me is now somewhere on the 'not especially
urgent' to-do list. Meanwhile, if anyone else is having trouble working
out just when during the night htdig started getting into trouble (or,
more likely, when one of the servers being indexed started getting into
trouble) one of my occasional useful thoughts has, after a check with an
unbearded guru, come up with a work-around for the time being ... I now
pipe the output from htdig through a perl one-liner thus:

/usr/sbin/htdig -v -i -h $HOPS -s -t -c htdig.conf \
        | perl -ple 'print "[",scalar localtime,"]" unless $. % 1000' \
                > $DBD/new/htdig.stdout \
                || exit 1

which drops in a timestamp every 1000 lines - which seems to equate to
every few minutes for my runs.

regards,
        Malcolm.
