You said "when I search," but have you reindexed? If you have, try 
running htdig with a -vvv flag and take a look at the headers it's 
receiving and the process of parsing a date.

You can use -a and -m together. They're not dependent on each other. 
Personally, I always use -a when indexing as I want to allow people to 
continue searching while the indexing/merging completes. I also like 
having backup copies--if something goes wrong with the .work files, I 
can just delete them and start again with -a to index from scratch.
