You shouldn't need to do this. If you can, try to grab a version of 
autoconf prior to autoconf 2.5x. (I think 2.13 is the last version along 
these lines.) Many things have changed significantly in autoconf 2.5x 
and this situation should really be treated as a "break as little as 
possible" situation.

I'll try to whip up a patch for you this afternoon--this morning is 
going to be very busy.
