Ok after hooouuuurrrs of wrangling with this, I've solved it! Nobody told me that you can ONLY have text between the tags you're using to exclude the content. It seemed perfectly rational to me to mark out the entire block of HTML that defines the side navigation. Indeed it doesn't make this clear in the documenation.
I kept trying various different tags/comments/words/godknowswhatelse. Finally I tried just enclosing each element of the navigation in the comment tags and it worked. Fortunately for me, I built a templating system, so I only have to insert the comment tags once, but if I was building each page manually, it would be a nightmare! It seems weird that htdig doesn't support encasing a block of code, doesn't it?
