If you don't need to keep two copies, then the -a option is not
necessary, though whether you use it or not doesn't make a lot
of difference in the time required for an update (i.e. it saves
only a copy/move and, temporarily, some disk space).

For an update, you should run without the -i option. If the server
and pages are setup such that conditional requests (based on date)
are supported, only pages that have changed will be retrieved.

I think htpurge should also be run.

As mentioned in the last message, you should take a look at the
rundig.3.2.sh script. It demonstrates the required steps and I
believe the options are all reasonable for what you are trying to
do (i.e. it does an initial dig the first time and only updates
thereafter.
