I believe so. The documentation for valid_punctuation states, This is the set of characters which will be deleted from the document before determining what a word is. If the '.' is deleted from the document before parsing out the words, it is long gone by the time indexing is done (i.e. there would be no .net in the database because there are no '.'s at all.
