Hi all, I really like htdig and would love to be more actively involved in its development, but not being a C++ person, the best I can do for now is present a wish list. I hope these are not items that have not already been addressed one way or another by the htdig development community.
1. An alternative query syntax. Specifically, google's query syntax. I find that within my environment (engineering education and research), the google query syntax with the +, -, and site: modifiers is *really* useful, usable, and quite natural. 2. An ability to insert a filter that is not keyword based between the actual search and the reply containing the hits, without having to necessarily write C++ code to add to htsearch itself. EG: I wrap htsearch in with a CGI that lets users select to only search for, say, web resources that are digital libraries, but not mailing list archives. I do this by keeping a separate db of this information, and then filtering htsearch's results through my own code (in perl) to pull only the kind of sites the user has requested. If you want to see this in action, see http://deed.ryerson.ca/cgi-bin/serf/search. Dunno if any of this makes sense to anyone else. It does to me. Keep up the good work! Cheers.
