If the htsearch script is requested without any arguments then it will use
htdig.conf. When I first set up htdig I did not have an htdig.conf file at
all and was long puzzled by occasional reports of messages about a missing
config file.

Now I have a skeleton htdig.conf file with just three lines:

include: ${config_dir}/soton.conf
logging: no
nothing_found_file:
/opt/local/www/www.search.soton.ac.uk/htdocs/soton/search.html

Where soton.conf is one of my other config. files and the nothing_found_file
is our main search page. So any request for htsearch without any arguments
will display a search form.

It works very well for us, and though it doesn't sound like so good a
solution for you it has to be better than what you have now.
