The first question is whether you can get to www.domain.com with another 
browser from the server machine. If not, then it's likely a global 
problem (and DNS would be at the top of my list).

If you want to use domain.com and have URLs re-written to www.domain.com 
at search time, you can use the search_rewrite_rules attribute.
