While that's probably a good idea, it's also something that's in a lot of UNIX/shell guides. You can redirect output (STDOUT) and error messages (STDERR) to different destinations. If you're using tcsh (IIRC, you're using Mac OS X and this is the default shell), try "man tcsh".
