Okay, before everyone yells at me for being a moron, I'm not a programmer, just a writer whose trying to make his little site searchable. I know a little unix, but am no expert.

Here's my question: My site is running on a hosted system. I have my own www root directory and domain name. I created a cgi-bin directory under the www root (/web/cgi-bin) and placed the tar there. I ran tar.gz with the xzf attributes and it placed the htdig directory at the same level as the tar file. I ran .configure, the end of which said to run ,make. The first time I did this and got errors. I deleted the entire htdig directory and reran tar.gz to get a clean install, reran .configure and then tried to VI my way through CONFIG. My question is: is there an optimal location to place these files in the heirarchy? What are they traditionally named? I read through the documentation but couldn't find anything that addresses this question. Also, when I specify the directory for DEST , etc. how far back does my path need to be? just to my web directory (/web) or all the way back to the server root, (../../../../../../../web/cgi-bin/htdig-3.1.6/dest_name)?

Thanks for your time and patience with this non-programmer,
-dg
