This is now resolved. I chmod'd search.html to 644 and htdig.conf to 755.
Thanks for the help
I have htdig 3.1.6 installed and running OK in the web site root but want
to install it lower down the server tree. All went well but when I entered
a name to search for in the search.html form I got the error 'cannot read
configuration file'.
