Anyone an idea how I can trick htdig in showing some featured documents at
the top of the search list, if the search string contains a featured string?

No, but there's a patch to 3.1.x (that was incorporated into the 3.2 code) that does similar things. The first was url_seed_score which was eventually supplanted by the search_results_order patch, allowing certain URL patterns to end up at the top of the list.
