If you have not already done so, the first step would be to enter the start_url in a browser on the server from which you are trying to run htdig. This will at least tell you if the web server(s) in question are behaving in a reasonably sane manner. If a browser gets reasonable results, then in theory htdig should be able to retrieve the same content.

Another issue is your version of ht://Dig. I am guessing you are using an RPM that came along with RedHat. You might want to grab a copy of the 3.1.6 source and build that instead. The version that RedHat ships is based either on a very old beta or on an oldish development snapshot. Neither is a particularly good choice for a production environment, unless some 3.2 feature is a must-have.

(htdig-3.2.0-7, Apache2, RH 8.0)

Hello,

I have server with lot of virtual members. Trying to index (almost) any of
them (as root user), a get this output. Indexing works fine for other
servers (which are configured both as "main" and "virtual") (?!). I tried
_everything_ with permissions, adding/removing "/"'s... What could be a
specific reason disrupting htdig to do its job?

Thanks for any help.

Nikola

My conf:
start_url: http://<virtual>/
limit_urls_to: http://<virtual>/

Output:
htdig: Run complete
htdig: 1 server seen:
htdig: www.<virtual>:80 0 documents
