I'd add to this that any Red Hat system that doesn't have /bin/sort
installed is probably badly broken. /bin/sort is part of the textutils or
coreutils package, depending on which Red Hat version you've installed,
and if that package is removed or corrupted I'd expect a lot of things
to go haywire on that machine.

You say "my redhat machine", yet you're not able to administer it?
If it's yours, find a way to get root access to it, and if it's not,
get someone who has root access to verify the installation. On Red
Hat 9, you should have coreutils installed. On Red Hat 8.0 or earlier,
you should have textutils installed. Run "rpm -V coreutils" or
"rpm -V textutils" to verify the package, and reinstall it if there's
a problem (which apparently there is).
