Hello all,

Sorry for the basic, silly question. Please feel free to reply off-list. HTDig just doesn't seem to do a very good job at all in doing rankings. I've made the titles very descriptive (i/e the main Hogs information page will have: "FactoryFarm.org: Hogs: Information & Resources"). I use META Keyword and Description tags (the hogs page has: "An extensive list of resources related to hog factory farms and their effects." for the description and "Factory Farm Project, hog, hogs, cafos, confinements, information, resources, info, basics, background, studies, download, downloadable, confinements, operations, industrial, GRACE Factory Farm Project, GFFP, factory farming, factory farm, factory farms, factory, farm, farming, farms" for the keywords).

The first paragraph of the main body of text within the page says: "This is the main topic page for hogs. Below you will find links to news, reports, facts, and other data throughout the site relating to this topic."

I don't know what else I could do to make this page higher ranked for searches such as "hogs" and "hog resources".

A search for "hogs" puts 1 page first, a search for "hog resources" puts 9 pages first. See the results at: http://www.factoryfarm.org/search/ and try a search for either term.

I don't really understand the criteria HTDig uses to rank pages, and the weight given to different aspects. But sometimes its logic totally escapes me -- most of those 9 pages listed above the main Hog Information & Resources page for a "hog resources" search hardly even mention hogs, and they don't even mention it in their titles or META Description or Keyword tags.

Could anyone please give me a hand with this? I really like supporting an open-source kind of non-commercial software, but HTDig's searching methodology seems really non-intuitive.

Thanks,
-Mike Flynn
