Well, without seeing what patches Debian Woody may have applied to
3.1.6, and without seeing your config file, I can just take a stab in
the dark.  I'd guess the most likely problem is someone added format,
startmonth, etc., to the setting of allow_in_form in your search config.
That attribute is only for making CGI parameters out of attributes that
don't already have a CGI parameter associated with them.  If that's not
the problem, then I think you'd need to post your config and a summary
of Debian's patches to htsearch.
