In conf/htdig.conf is the line defining

database_dir with an initial value of var/htdig from wherever your base
directory for running ht-Dig is.

In bin/rundig are the lines defining

DBDIR, COMMONDIR, and BINDIR with initial values of var/htdig, share/htdig, and
bin, respectively, wherever your base directory for running ht-Dig is.

Which definition of the directory with the databases takes precedence? Why
define it in both files? Why define the directory with the commands to create
the database in the rundig script which itself is found in that directory and
why not define it in htdig.conf? Similarly, why define the COMMONDIR which
contains reference files in rundig and not in htdig.conf? If the definitions
in the two files play different roles, why is that only true for the database
directory? TIA.
