I just wanted to thank the ht/dig community for all of your help, both responses to specific questions that I posed to this list and for all of the answers that I found in the list archives (I am sure that I read 000s of msgs). I don't know much about computers so the fact that I was able to get an htdig server running that indexes all sorts of different pdf and microsoft files and seems pretty robust is a testament to how well Htdig is written and supported. If anyone has similar problems as I experienced I will definitely chime in going forward.
I wanted to especially thank Martin Allert for help with parser scripts, and also Giles, David Adams, and olinux. I still have plenty to do - php wrapper that manages the search results and pulls related content out of a mysql server I have now added, etc. but I just wanted to thank all of you for your help.
