What I am wondering is where do the databases that runhtdig creates have to live. Do they need to be in a web accessible directory? I currently have them in /opt/www/htdig/db/foo.db (default install).
That's fine, these do not need to be in a web accessible directory.
My web directory is not in /opt/www/ which is why i'm asking this question I guess. My web root is /Library/WebServer/Documents/http/specific_user/
CGI dir is /Library/WebServer/CGI/
You'll want to copy htsearch to your cgi directory it is probably located here: /opt/www/htdig/bin/htsearch

Josh,
This is what I have at the moment, maybe I'm describing it incorrectly because I thought that was where the problem was. When I try to run /cgi-bin/htsearch in a web browser this is what comes back :
-- ht://Dig error
htsearch detected an error. Please report this to the webmaster of this site. The error message is:
Unable to read word database file
Did you run htmerge?

now htmerge ran with the script the first time, and I have run it manually afterwards as well, which is why I thought the search wasn't finding the database at all.
Is there a way to get more information when the cgi script returns a result?
